Dr. E. Susana Mariscal is a Full Professor at the Indiana University School of Social Work and a nationally recognized community-engaged scholar. Her work focuses on strengths-based, trauma-informed approaches to child maltreatment prevention and the promotion of child and family resilience. She served as Principal Investigator of Strengthening Indiana Families, a five-year federally funded initiative that established and sustained four Family Resource Centers across Indiana with the support from multiple partners across systems.
The initiative, co-led with Dr. Bryan Victor (Wayne State University), reached over 32,000 visits and delivered more than 72,000 services between 2021 and 2024. The state of Indiana sustained and replicated the model six times, creating a statewide network of 10 Family Resource Centers. These centers support families and communities through the Strengthening Indiana Families Association and provide accessible prevention-focused services.
Dr. Mariscal’s work connects research, practice, and policy to address complex challenges and strengthen community-based prevention efforts. She leads and collaborates on multiple federally funded projects, including LAT-VIDA, a national study examining Latina victimization and resilience led by Dr. Chiara Sabina (Rutgers University). Dr. Mariscal is expanding her work to build cross-system partnerships that provide holistic support for families with caregivers affected by cancer in collaboration with Dr. Vanessa Parker (IUSSW).
She has secured more than $12.2 million in external funding and authored 36 refereed publications, three books, and 62 grant reports. Her work also includes more than 150 presentations, including two invitations to the White House. She was recognized as a 2024 Innovator in the Field by the Christensen Institute for her contributions to prevention and community impact.
Her teaching emphasizes student-centered learning grounded in andragogy principles and the understanding-by-design framework. She primarily teaches social work research, practice and program evaluation, and community practice with children and families. She mentors faculty and students using strengths-based, culturally responsive approaches to scholarship, teaching, and leadership. She is also committed to advancing student and faculty development and community-engaged research that improves outcomes for children and families.
